Winston Churchill , Sir

One of the world’s great statesmen, Sir Winston Churchill served as Prime Minister throughout World War II, then returned to the post in 1951 until he resigned the in 1954. Along with Stalin and Roosevelt, Churchill was credited with stopping the rise of Nazi Germany and leading Europe through the war and into the Cold War era. All told, he was a force in the U.K. government for almost three decades. He was a staunch opponent of Neville Chamberlain’s conciliation toward Hitler, stating at one point in a telling Winston Churchill quote: “You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war.” He died in 1965, leaving a legacy behind that few can aspire to equal, let alone surpass.

Sir Winston Churchill had a gift for public oratory, and left us with many great quotes. Here’s one great quote by Sir Winston Churchill, “A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.” The subject of lies often came up in Winston Churchill quotes, perhaps because of his own experience in politics. “There is a terrible lot of lies going about the world, and the worst of it is that half of them are true.” Not one to ever pull punches he offered up this terrific piece of advice, one of the all-time favorite Winston Churchill quotes: “Don’t be careless about yourselves – on the other hand not too careful. Live well but don’t flaunt it. Laugh a little and teach your men to laugh – get good humor under fire – war is a game played with a smile. If you can’t smile, grin. If you can’t grin, keep out of the way till you can.”
