Born into a middle class Florence family, Michelangelo apprenticed under Domencio Ghirlandjo and then Lorenzo de Medici, who where he learned from the masters of the Italian court. A key figure in the Renaissance movement, Michelangelo was commissioned to do several of his most familiar works, including the Pieta, the sculpture of the Virgin Mary nursing her crucified son and his most well known sculpture, David, which was carved from a single piece of marble. He and da Vinci had a contentious relationship at times, refusing to work together. His lasting achievement was the painting of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, which took four long years to complete.
