Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi worked tirelessly throughout his life to reduce the spread of poverty in India and put an end to the caste system, which had promoted discrimination and separatism. Gandhi preached that simplicity was the path to greater rewards and he was known for donating his own clothes to those less fortunate than he. He spread his word through non-violent civil disobedience and often went on long fasts that were as much for protest and purification. One of India’s most important political and spiritual leaders, Gandhi helped lead India to its independence from years of British rule. He also fought to end other injustices in the region, which ultimately lead to his death at the hands of a fanatical madman. Death didn’t end Gandhi’s journey, and today he is a symbol of hope for millions around the world who have taken up his cause for peace and simplicity.

Gandhi’s teachings continue to live on as well. Mahatma Gandhi quotes are famous for their deep meaning, wrapped in seeming simplicity. “Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes,” goes one Gandhi quote. Another Mahatma Gandhi quote states, “Man should forget his anger before he lies down to sleep.” A favorite quote of Gandhi said, “My imperfections and failures are as much a blessing from God as my successes and my talents and I lay them both at his feet. Finally, this Gandhi quote, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”
